Gardiner Foundation Working in Dairy Communities Small Grants
The Geoffrey Gardiner Dairy Foundation is committed to strengthening Victorian dairy communities, and partners with FRRR to provide a $100,000 annual fund that awards $5,000 grants for innovative, community-driven projects.
In 2013, the Gardiner Foundation Working in Dairy Communities Small Grants awarded 31 grants for local projects to meet community needs.
These grants aim to strengthen small Victorian dairy communities, help build their capacity to deal with local issues, and enhance existing community infrastructure - just like the Venus Bay Lower and District Men's Shed Inc.
It’s a community driven hole in one!
Venus Bay Tarwin Lower and District Men's Shed Inc is located in a little community in South Gippsland, Victoria, where the local blokes have big ideas.
The big idea was to construct a fully transportable mini golf course to be used at fundraising and community events throughout the region, and be a resource the community can use well into the future.
Getting the ball rolling
Applying for a Gardiner Foundation grant, the project received $3,138 to produce a 12 hole course. The Gardiner Foundation is committed to strengthening Victorian dairy communities by providing grants for innovative, community-driven projects. And the Community Miniature Portable Putt Putt Golf Course ticked all of the boxes!
The planning process for the course was significant. The Men's Shed members used all their available skills and creative thinking to overcome a few obstacles. Open communication ensured that the volunteers stayed within scope, and met challenges head on to deliver a winning project.
Community support keeps project outcome on course
The community feedback has been extremely positive from all groups and ages. The course started taking bookings straight away, particularly local primary schools and kindergartens, with around 10 events locked in for the first six months.
This is a wonderful example of community groups thinking big to deliver a sustainable project that will benefit the local community for years to come.
